Overture

This painting marked the start of a series that primarily focused on the sensation of powerful forces. Wind, water currents, temperature and all sorts of natural phenomena were the first things to come to mind. I didn’t want the painting to be a straight-up representational landscape though. The imagery isn’t rooted to a particular time and place, or any other more realistic context where it’s effects can be rationalized, measured or ‘expected’. I wanted it to feel like there were forces that kept things in control that’s just completely given out. Lots of JMW Turner in there, as well as Cy Twombly, and was also thinking about late Monet and Leonardo’s deluge drawings. The other bit of inspiration came from the rhythmic propulsion of Philip Glass’ music. Got really into it and probably was the soundtrack to a few dreams.

  1. Nice, really nice. Lots of Turner, but that’s no bad thing. This is really nice work. Like this a lot!
